The Kanakagiri hill has been described by writers as a peak like Nakopamana Shaila, which means a peak like heaven. Kanakagiri Sri Kshetra is one of the famous Jain centers. It is called Maleyagiri because there were sandalwood trees in Kanakagiri near Maleyuru and it is said that Nagavarma, the son-in-law of Pujyapada, was going to convert the entire hill into a golden hill with the alchemy he knew, and hence it is famous as Kanakagiri. Even today, ancient footprints carved on large rocks in this mountain style. Stone inscriptions, Samadhi Mantapa, Caves etc. are place of worship. This place is about 23. km. away from Chamarajanagar.
